Interesting in joining the team? There are opportunities available. See details below as it pertains to you.

All members of the Palmer lab are expected to abide by the Code of Conduct. Please read this document and commit to its principles prior to reaching out about joining the team. For everyone interested in joining the team, please do some homework in advance. Read the guidelines below as they pertain to you. I read all of my emails. If you send me an e-mail, I will read it. However, I will not reply if it isn’t obvious to me that you’ve already read the guidelines below and done your best to follow them. I follow this rule in order to make sure I’m investing time in replying to people with genuine interest.
Undergraduates:
There is generally a much higher demand for undergraduate research experiences than there are places available in research labs at Binghamton. Because of the high demand, I feel an obligation to give students an opportunity who are interested in a career in research over those seeking primarily to pursue professional degrees (e.g. MD, DVM, DMD, etc.).
If you would like to do research with me, please send me an e-mail with your resume, current academic standing (e.g. 1st year, 2nd year, etc.), your career goals (e.g. MD, DVM, PhD, industry) and specific information about why you want to do undergraduate research with us. If this seems intimidating, it might be best to invest some time in reading and thinking before reaching out. The best chance for you to be selected to join the group is to show genuine interest and curiosity in a topic related to the kind of research we do in the lab.
Wondering what you should write?
Some questions to get you started: Have you read any of our papers? What questions come up in your mind about future directions of the work? Have you read any other papers or books recently that have inspired you? If you have your own personal research interests and you’d like to discuss possibilities of mentorship in pursuit of your research goals, I am very happy to do that.
Note the dates below when I will make decisions about joining the lab for the upcoming terms. Based on the number of applicants, I may hold short, informal interviews to get to know you a bit better.
Current spaces available for:
Spring ’26: 0-2.
If you have not conducted undergraduate research previously, please apply to the lab via BUPNUR: https://www.binghamton.edu/student-research-and-scholarship/undergraduate-research/projects.html
Deadline to express interest: November 14, 2025.
Graduate Students (Masters/PhD):
Currently not recruiting new PhD students. I am unlikely to take any new PhD students until 2027. (updated August 2025)
If you are interested in pursuing an NSF GRFP with me or other type of external fellowship, please send me an e-mail with your Resume/CV and information about the project you’re interested in working on, and why you’d like to do it as part of our team. Please include information about your career goals, interests, and specific research questions that excite you.
Postdoc: Anyone looking for a postdoc opportunity, please reach out. Send me an email and include your career goals, scientific interests, and specific research questions that excite you. Ideally, include why you want to work in our lab specifically. I do have some funding available for the right person/project. I am also happy to collaborate on postdoc fellowship applications for anyone interesting in doing a more independent postdoc at Binghamton with mentorship from me.
